Should a 76 yr. old woman diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer decide to not go with radiation after surgery?

Due to age, possible damage of skin and/or internal organs wanting to maintain quality of life. Is this a common choice of older cancer patients?

Ok, I have abdominal radiation damage mainly to my intestines..has any body out there experienced this?

I suffer severe cramps and fequency...if you get my drift>.makes my life revolve around where the restrooms are and makes working fulltime very hard due to sick days and frequent visits to the restroom. I had ballon theropy done and it hasnt worked..I also have been given a depression pill to depress the pain...it just depressed the intestines so bad they decided not to work at all!! Now I also show and enlarged cervix in an Ultra sound and am worried my cancer may be back even though Dr.s say it is hard for cancer to regrow in radiated areas. Has ANYONE suffered like me after radiation treatments for cervical cancer??I would love to talk with someone who understands. I also have neuropathy of my legs due to the treatments. Its been 8 years ago and I have suffered so much with the intestines.Just want to know if anyone has experienced this and if there is some relief known????

In week 3 out of 6 of radiation for breast cancer, can it cause my eyebrows & eye lashes to thin, fall out?

If so, no one told me this was a side affect. My hair is growing back from chemo so why isn't that affected or will it be also?

Should my mom have radiation?

My mom has been diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer with a small lesion on the minubrium (bone by neck). she is 86,looks like 70 and feels great. The doctor has given her the option to do 7 weks of radiation or to let her watch it and see how things go while she feels so good. i don't know what to advise her as I am so afraid of putting her through this radiation and the fatigue. Any advice?

If low level radiation has a protective effect, is it therefore safer not to use sunscreen?

A recent Horizon TV programme here in the UK reported that living organisms exposed to relatively low level radiation in the Chernobyl fallout area (but much higher than average background levels) showed no significant increase in cancer - In fact low level radiation appears to activate genes which are involved with repair of genetic material, thus providing a protective effect.

If this is the case, then aren't we actually safer doing some moderate sunbathing without sunscreen, than slapping on the sunscreen and staying out for hours on end? It seems to me that the increase in skin cancer in many parts of the world in recent years coincides with an increase in the use of sunscreen. Certainly, no sunscreen manufacturer claims that their products prevent or even limit skin cancer, because there's no evidence that they do. It may well be safer not to use the stuff, and let your skin protect itself naturally instead.

Any expert opinions welcome...

Are chemo and radiation the primary treatments for most cancers in other countries?

A friend told me that in India there's a very low rate of cancer in part due to the amount of curry and other nutrients they had, and that chemo wasn't routinely used, but I have no idea how accurate that information might be. It does seem like in the US and the UK everybody just pushes chemo and scoffs when you suggest other treatments that are more holistic.

Does anyone know what the standard treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma is in France, and if they just do the same exact things as in the US?
ThinKabootit - I appreciate your informative answer, but it was uncalled for to be so hostile. My friend is only fifteen years old, and lived in India for a while where someone probably told her the rates of cancer are lower, and she believed them, and then told me. She wasn't claiming to be a doctor, and is not ignorant or evil. She was just mistaken. Simmer down.

Radiation therapy for Cancer – can one lead a normal life?

My MIL had breast cancer and had an operation recently. She has to undergo radiation, chemotherapy and what-not for the next few months. She stays all alone. My husband is her only child. She wants to come over and stay with us during her treatment. Now my husband travels very frequently, so I guess looking after my MIL will be completely my responsibility. I am a bit apprehensive about this. What are the side-effects of radiation? Will she be able to look after herself during her treatment? She is doing fine now, but I dont want her to become bed-ridden one she starts her radiation, that too when my husband is away. So please tell me the facts. Doctors and people who have undergone treatment for cancer, please let me know.
